What is a LAN?
LAN is an acronym for “Local Area Network”. It’s a collection of computers across one site usually within 100 to 150 metres that are all interlinked, making use of shared storage, files and other peripherals.

Hardware used in a LAN:
Network Cards:Usually found on the back of PC’s, these plug into the Hub or Switch using a RJ45 cable, connecting the computer to the Local Area Network.

Wireless Network Card: Similar as the above, but without the cables. Wireless access cards can be used to connect to a wireless network using radio waves. This isn’t as fast as traditional, cabled access.

RJ45 Cables: These cables come in two types. Normally designed to plug straight into a hub from a computer or server. Although in special circumstances a Crossover can be used to cut out the hub and directly connect two computers together quickly and effortlessly.

Switch/Hub: The Switch or Hub is the Interconnection device of most Local Area Networks. Passing packets between devices that are connected. This can be Servers, Work Stations, Routers, Printers and other peripherals. The difference between a hub and a switch; Hubs send packets to all systems connected to it. Where as a Switch has it’s own addressing system making it more efficient!

Wireless Access Point: Either built in or connected to a hub/switch, allowing people who are using Wireless Network Cards to access the network.
