Is “AutoPligg” killing Pligg?

Just my thought of this morning. I have been browsing around a few websites powered by Pligg and all of them have been over run with Spam.  AutoPligg has really brought Pligg sites to there knees.

It really is a shame. Whilst in good hands it could be an excellent link building tool, it seems to used just for heavy amounts of spamming.

Of course I very much doubt this is having a big impact on average web browser like my Mum, as many of these sites will barely ever get looked at :-)

Personally I think the Pligg community should have reacted much faster by putting in more measures to prevent this kind of thing getting as far as it has.

Anyway.. its just a shame to see so many websites getting hit with so much crap.

Are you sure its Autopligg there seems to be more then one tool doing this?
The bottom line really, its users not the tool and the way search engines treat links
Now if goolge and the others where to stop trying to save face and just say there now utilize a small army of people to grade websites this sort of thing would stop
As all the sites that come into the top 40 serps get kicked out if they are below quality now

I see this as a useful tool in the right hands

Hi Peter, thanks for your comment.

With great power comes great responsibility.

There could be other tools to do it as well now, AutoPligg was certainly the original though.

Pligg was overrun with spam long before AutoPligg showed up.. I tried to run a pligg based site and after a month I scrapped it.. It’s nearly impossible to secure without a real development staff on hand to find and plug the holes.. Plus, I was there before there was even an email verification process, it was worse then..

While I admire the effort that the developers put in to Pligg, their attention to security simply did not exist.. It’s like it never occurred to them that there were link spammers in the world..

I didn’t know there were tools prior to AutoPligg, thanks for the info & thanks for your comment.

I’d say the potential damnation of the Pligg sites falls squarely on the Pligg sites owners. WordPress spam didn’t kill wordpress, and Pligg spam won’t kill pligg…re-captcha is all it takes to stop pligg spam…that’s it, nothing more. Re-Captcha capability is included in the latest version of Pligg and only has to be enabled.

Look, let’s stop pandering to the lowest common denominator of webmaster and site owners…it’s on them to take the time and actually READ something before running around like Chicken Little “OMG, OMG!! PLIGG IS DEAD” :P

    Hi Machi,

Thanks for your comment. You right spam didn’t kill WordPress, but WordPress reacted to it much more efficiently.

However WordPress does have a ton more users/developers supporting it.

    Cheers,
    Anthony
