Since I’ve been Internet Marketing I frequently get into debates and asked questions about Link Building. Whether a particular webmaster should buy links to improve his ranking and of course how many. I’m going to cover some simple points on why buying links isn’t so bad (unless you get caught). What the alternatives are and how to calculate what sort of linkage you need to buy.
Realistically its impossible to get anywhere without paid links on most “competitive” phrases. A big example would be ’Credit Cards’, how on earth are new start-ups going to compete against the giants like Money Super Market who are probably buying links themselves anyway!
Ok so we’ve now got a goal, but how can you calculate the amount of links required for the target phrase. Its important to first realise that quality is better than quantity and that Google doesn’t display in all your inbound links when you type use the “link:” button. Or that is my personal opinion on it anyway. So its worth first checking how many inbound links your competitors have on Google, Yahoo and Alexa and create an average. Now of course depending on how much time you have you would examine those links and draw conclusions of how beneficial they really keeping in mind that all links carry some weight.
So you’ve done all of the above? Now the bit that requires the most care is of course buying the links. Like most things in life SEO is no different. You get what you pay for. So its better to take sometime and research your options, or you can use a professional. I would recommend paying a minimum of $40 / £20 per link. Its also worth checking that the sites that are linking to you aren’t in any bad neighbourhoods.
Don’t spam links, this is one thing I’ve noticed much more of recently. Wordpress Comment Spamming, Automated Forum Registrations just for one link. Its crazy, its spam and it will get you banned from Google. Whilst I won’t name, names I saw this one site that had done a huge amount of Forum Registration spamming and temporarly held the top position for viagra with over 500 links from different forums.
The most important thing, beyond any marketing is to offer a service that your visitor will find valuable, without this SEO is a useless task.
